5 Principles to Define your Journey
May 23, 20225 Principles to Define your Journey
When defining your journey, it is essential that you physically write down (on paper) your ambitions, goals, dreams, and ideas.
Why Write?
"Writing bridges the conscious and the subconscious mind. Writing is a psycho-neuromuscular activity and imprints on the brain."
Purpose
Your primary goal here is to define what fulfills you. The most effective way is to determine the roles you play in your life. Examples of your functions (roles) include self, father, mother, husband, wife, friend, daughter, son, employer, employee, etc.
Plan
Once you have defined your roles, list what is most important to you in each one of these roles, then complete a self-assessment to see where you are and each one of these desired outcomes for your roles. Finally, define what you need to improve or change for each of your roles.
Practice
Competency is the key to all success in life. If you have determined that one of your areas you need to change or improve upon in a role may be communication, you must learn how to communicate. Competencies can be attained through simply reading, talking with a peer who has experience with a particular skill set or reviewing the plethora of free material you could find online. For example, if I have a challenge in communication because I listen with the intent to respond and not to understand, I now know this is a skill I have to develop.
Perseverance
Perseverance plays a critical role once your plan is in place and you are practicing—your ability to stay the course even when things seem like they're falling apart. A steady, persistent adherence to your plan of action creates success in your life. A continued effort to achieve what you're trying to gain is the root of progress. Of course, there will be times when things fail, but failure is a lesson on what does not work. Perseverance also includes adjusting your sail as you journey on.
Proactive
To act proactively is to anticipate any future problems, needs, or potential changes. This is where you have the foresight to see how you are doing on your journey and to make the necessary changes as you continue. An example of being proactive could include a concern with health. You may be slightly overweight and now adjust your habits to accommodate your needs before a condition develops that could become acute and even chronic. Being proactive is working on the important things in your life, not the urgent things. For example, if you want to lose weight, you have to go to the gym, as the gym will not come to you.
