The Chains We Don’t See

“293 days. That’s how long I hesitated before launching Tiger Resilience. Why? Because I believed I wasn’t ready. I told myself I needed more time, more learning, more validation. But the truth was, I was trapped—not by circumstances, but by my own limiting beliefs.”

We all carry invisible chains. They’re the thoughts that whisper, “You can’t,” “You’re not enough,” or “You’ll fail.” These beliefs often feel like facts, but they’re not—they’re stories we’ve internalized over time. The good news? Those chains can be broken.

Today, we’re diving into three powerful steps to reclaim your power from limiting beliefs. Whether you’re struggling with self-doubt, fear of failure, or the weight of past mistakes, this is your guide to breaking free and stepping into the life you deserve.

What Are Limiting Beliefs and Where Do They Come From?

Limiting beliefs are the mental barriers that keep us stuck. They’re the stories we tell ourselves about what we can or can’t do, often rooted in past experiences, societal expectations, or the words of others.

For example:

  • A teacher once told you, “You’re not creative,” and now you avoid any artistic pursuits.
  • You grew up in a family that struggled financially, so you believe success isn’t meant for people like you.
  • You failed at something important, and now you assume failure is inevitable.

These beliefs might feel protective, like they’re shielding you from disappointment. But in reality, they’re holding you back from growth, joy, and fulfillment.

Here’s the truth: Limiting beliefs are not your identity. They’re not permanent. And they’re not facts. They’re just stories—and you have the power to rewrite them.

Transformation Through the Four Human Domains

Breaking free from limiting beliefs isn’t just a mental exercise—it’s a holistic process that involves the body, mind, heart, and spirit. Here’s how each domain plays a role in your transformation:

Body: Moving Through the Resistance
Have you ever noticed how your body reacts when you’re stuck in a negative belief? Your shoulders tense, your jaw tightens, your breath becomes shallow. Limiting beliefs don’t just live in your mind—they live in your body too.

Action Step: Use movement to disrupt the physical grip of limiting beliefs. This could be as simple as a 10-minute walk, a yoga session, or hitting the gym. Michael often says, “Movement is momentum.” When you move your body, you remind yourself that you’re capable of forward motion, even when your mind feels stuck.

Mind: Reframing the Narrative
The mind is where limiting beliefs take root, but it’s also where they can be dismantled. Start by identifying the belief. Write it down. Then, challenge it. Ask yourself:

  • Is this belief absolutely true?
  • What evidence do I have to support or refute it?
  • What would I say to a friend who believed this about themselves?

For example, if your belief is, “I’m not smart enough to start my own business,” counter it with, “I’m smart enough to learn, grow, and figure things out as I go.”

Heart: Healing the Emotional Wounds
Limiting beliefs often come from a place of fear or pain. To truly break free, you must address the emotions tied to those beliefs. This requires self-compassion and emotional honesty.

Action Step: Practice self-compassion by speaking to yourself the way you’d speak to a loved one. Bernie often reflects on his journey from homelessness to leadership, reminding himself: “You’ve faced harder battles than this. You’re stronger than you think.”

Spirit: Trusting in Your Transformation
This is where the Phoenix rises. Letting go of limiting beliefs requires faith—faith in yourself, faith in the process, and faith that something greater is guiding your journey.

Action Step: Reflect on your purpose. Why are you here? What impact do you want to make? Aligning with your purpose gives you the strength to rise above limiting beliefs and step into your power.

The Three Steps to Reclaim Your Power

  1. Awareness: Recognize the Belief
The first step to breaking free is awareness. You can’t change what you don’t acknowledge. Pay attention to the thoughts that hold you back. Write them down. Name them.

For example:

“I’m not good enough.”

“I’ll never succeed.”

“I don’t deserve happiness.”

Once you’ve identified the belief, ask yourself: Where did this come from? Is it serving me, or is it keeping me stuck?

  1. Challenge: Question Its Validity
Limiting beliefs often crumble under scrutiny. Challenge the belief by asking:

Is this belief based on facts or assumptions?

What evidence contradicts this belief?

How would my life change if I let go of this belief?

For example, if you believe, “I’ll never be fit,” challenge it by looking at times when you’ve made progress, no matter how small. Remind yourself, “Fitness is a journey, and every step counts.”

  1. Replace: Create a New Belief
Once you’ve challenged the limiting belief, replace it with one that empowers you. This new belief should align with your goals and values.

For example:

Old Belief: “I’m not good enough.”

New Belief: “I am enough, and I’m capable of growth.”

Reinforce this new belief through daily affirmations, visualization, and action. The more you practice it, the more it will become your new truth.

The Tiger and Phoenix

Imagine this: You’re a tiger in the wild—strong, focused, and capable. But you’ve been living in a cage built by your own beliefs. The cage isn’t real; it’s a construct of your mind. The moment you realize this, the door swings open. You step out, reclaiming your power and freedom.

Now, picture the Phoenix. It’s consumed by flames, reduced to ashes. But from those ashes, it rises—renewed, transformed, and stronger than ever. Limiting beliefs are like the fire. They burn away the old, making way for the new.

Together, the Tiger and the Phoenix remind us that we have the strength to break free and the resilience to rise.

Journal Prompts for Self-Reflection

  1. What’s one belief about yourself that’s holding you back?
  2. Where did this belief come from?
  3. What evidence do you have that challenges this belief?
  4. What new belief would empower you to move forward?
  5. What’s one small action you can take today to align with your new belief?

Rise

Your beliefs shape your reality. If you want to change your life, start by changing your beliefs. Recognize the chains that are holding you back. Challenge them. Replace them. And take one small step today toward the life you deserve.

Remember, the Tiger within you is strong, disciplined, and ready to break free. The Phoenix within you is wise, resilient, and ready to rise. Together, they remind you that transformation is possible—no matter where you’re starting from.

🌟 Help Us Launch a Movement for the Next Generation 🌟

At Tiger Resilience, we believe resilience isn’t just something adults build after adversity — it’s something we can plant early, in the hearts of children. That’s why we created Tiger Resilience Kids — a story-based series rooted in the same Five Pillars and Four Human Domains that guide our adult programs: 🔥 Purpose, Planning, Practice, Perseverance, and Providence — for the Body, Mind, Heart, and Spirit.

Our first children’s book, Theo and the Courageous Climb, follows a young tiger cub learning to face fear and keep going — even when the climb feels too scary. It’s a tender, powerful introduction to purpose, self-belief, confidence, and emotional growth for kids ages 4–8.

🎁 Right now, we’re inviting a limited number of parents, educators, and early supporters to join our ARC (Advance Review Copy) Launch Team. You’ll get early access to the book and bonus resources — all we ask in return is your honest feedback and a review if the story resonates with you.
