From Cage to Freedom: The Mindset Shift That Changes Everything
May 22, 2025The Cage We Build Ourselves
“I was surviving like a tiger in a cage—strong, powerful, but stuck. The bars weren’t real, yet they felt impenetrable. The cage wasn’t built by anyone else; I had built it with my own limiting beliefs. It wasn’t until I decided to break free, to challenge the stories I had been telling myself, that I realized the cage was never locked to begin with.”
Does this sound familiar? Have you ever felt like you’re trapped in a version of your life that doesn’t reflect your potential? Maybe it’s the voice telling you you’re not good enough. Maybe it’s the fear of failure or the weight of past mistakes. Whatever it is, it feels like a cage. But here’s the truth: the cage isn’t real. It’s a construct of your mind, and you have the power to break free.
Today, we will explore the mindset shift that can change everything. If you’re ready to step out of the cage and into your freedom, this is where it begins.
Bernie’s Perspective: The Hospital Isn’t the Hard Part. Your Head Is.
It’s 5:10 AM, and Valerie (my wife) and I are driving toward Chester County Memorial Hospital. It’s quiet. Still. One of those mornings when your mind gets louder than the road. That’s the thing about moments like this: they don’t just test your body. They test the limits you’ve put on your own peace.
This started a couple of years ago when I noticed a small bulge in my groin—nothing major. I chalked it up to age and ignored it. But it kept shifting. Some days, I could push it back in. Other days, it pulled at my nerves—not just physically but mentally. And that’s when the real limitation showed up: fear.
My thoughts went straight back to when I was a kid, watching my father fight cancer. Three and a half years of slow, steady decline. That trauma carved a place in me. So when this minor issue appeared, my mind didn’t see a hernia. It saw history repeating itself.
That’s how limitations often work. They’re not always rooted in reality. Sometimes they come from the past. From unspoken grief. From stories we’ve told ourselves so many times they start to sound like truth.
Eventually, I got checked. The diagnosis was clear: an inguinal hernia. Manageable. Treatable. Not life-threatening. But even with facts on my side, I canceled the surgery three times. One doctor retired. One appointment disappeared. One I skipped to put work first. And in each of those moments, I felt the quiet weight of an old mindset, the belief that taking care of myself was optional.
That’s the limitation I’m talking about—not the hernia, not the habit of self-denial, not the inherited belief that strength means powering through. That mindset can look noble, but over time, it becomes a cage.
When I finally committed to surgery, the fear didn’t disappear. But I approached it differently. I prepared. I reflected. I remembered that my father didn’t get the choice to intervene early. I did. And that meant I could choose a different path.
The night before, I couldn’t sleep. My mind spun through every worst-case scenario. But then it shifted. I started thinking about how many times I’ve faced discomfort and made it through. I remembered that limitations only define you if you never question them. And I remembered that mindset is the one thing no surgeon can operate on, it’s mine to strengthen.
The next morning, I walked into that hospital with uncertainty, but not defeat. Four days later, I’m healing. A little sore. A little slower. But lighter. Because the fear that once owned the story no longer runs the show.
So let me ask you:
What limitations in your life aren’t physical at all?
What habits, memories, or assumptions are holding more weight than the truth?
And when that old fear shows up again, are you willing to meet it with a new mindset?
Because sometimes the greatest limitation isn’t your body.
It’s the belief that you can’t change the way the story ends.

The Invisible Cage of Limiting Beliefs
The most dangerous cages are the ones we can’t see. They’re not made of steel or iron—they’re made of thoughts, fears, and beliefs that hold us back. These limiting beliefs often sound like:
- “I’m not smart enough.”
- “I’ll never succeed.”
- “I don’t deserve happiness.”
These beliefs aren’t facts; they’re stories we’ve internalized over time. Maybe they came from a critical parent, a painful failure, or a society that told you to stay in your lane. Over time, these stories become the bars of your cage, keeping you from stepping into your full potential.
But here’s the thing: the cage isn’t real. The moment you recognize this, you can begin to dismantle it. And the key to breaking free is a mindset shift—a decision to challenge the beliefs that no longer serve you and replace them with truths that empower you.
Transformation Through the Four Human Domains
Breaking free from the cage of limiting beliefs requires a holistic approach that addresses the body, mind, heart, and spirit. Here’s how each domain plays a role in your transformation:
Body: Moving Toward Freedom
Our bodies often carry the weight of our beliefs. Have you ever noticed how your shoulders tense when you’re stressed or how your breath becomes shallow when you’re doubting yourself? These physical reactions are your body’s way of holding onto limiting beliefs.
Action Step: Start moving your body intentionally. Whether it’s a walk, a workout, or a yoga session, movement helps release the physical grip of limiting beliefs. Michael often says, “The body fuels the mind.” When you move, you remind yourself of your strength and capability.
Mind: Rewriting the Narrative
The mind is where the cage is built, but it’s also where it can be dismantled. Start by identifying the belief that’s holding you back. Write it down. Then, challenge it. Ask yourself:
- Is this belief absolutely true?
- What evidence do I have to support or refute it?
- What would my life look like if I let go of this belief?
For example, if your belief is, “I’m not good enough,” counter it with, “I am enough, and I’m capable of growth.”
Heart: Healing Emotional Wounds
Limiting beliefs often come from a place of fear or pain. To truly break free, we must address the emotions tied to those beliefs. This requires self-compassion and emotional honesty.
Action Step: Practice self-compassion by speaking to yourself the way you’d speak to a loved one. Bernie often reflects on his journey from homelessness to leadership, reminding himself: “You’ve faced harder battles than this. You’re stronger than you think.”
Spirit: Trusting in Your Transformation
This is where the Phoenix rises. Letting go of limiting beliefs requires faith—faith in yourself, faith in the process, and faith that something greater is guiding your journey.
Action Step: Reflect on your purpose. Why are you here? What impact do you want to make? Aligning with your purpose gives you the strength to rise above limiting beliefs and step into your power.
Tiger Resilience Five Pillars in Action
The Tiger Resilience framework offers a roadmap for transformation. Here’s how the Five Pillars can guide you as you break free from the cage of limiting beliefs:
- Purpose
Every belief you hold should align with your purpose. If it doesn’t, it’s time to let it go. Ask yourself: “Does this belief serve the life I want to create?” If the answer is no, replace it with one that does. - Planning
Set a clear plan to challenge your beliefs. For example, if you believe you’re not qualified for a promotion, plan to take one small step each day to build your confidence—whether it’s updating your resume, taking a course, or seeking mentorship. - Practice
Rewiring your mindset takes consistent effort. Practice affirmations, visualization, or mindfulness daily. These habits reinforce new, empowering beliefs. - Perseverance
Change isn’t easy. There will be days when old beliefs resurface. When that happens, remember: resilience is built through perseverance. Keep going, even when it’s hard. - Providence
Trust the process. Just as the Phoenix rises from ashes, you too can rise from the weight of limiting beliefs. Every step you take is bringing you closer to the life you deserve.
The Tiger and Phoenix
Imagine this: You’re a tiger in the wild—strong, focused, and capable. But you’ve been living in a cage built by your own beliefs. The cage isn’t real; it’s a construct of your mind. The moment you realize this, the door swings open. You step out, reclaiming your power and freedom.
Now, picture the Phoenix. It’s consumed by flames, reduced to ashes. But from those ashes, it rises—renewed, transformed, and stronger than ever. Limiting beliefs are like the fire. They burn away the old, making way for the new.
Together, the Tiger and the Phoenix remind us that we have the strength to break free and the resilience to rise.
