Heart of the Tiger, Spirit of the Phoenix: Honoring Our Military and the Power of Connection

That’s how many Americans serve on active duty today. Millions more have served before them. And behind every name etched into a memorial wall, behind every folded flag, there’s a story—a family, a sacrifice, a legacy that echoes far beyond the battlefield.

On Memorial Day, we pause to remember the fallen. But remembrance isn’t just about looking back—it’s about carrying forward the spirit of those who gave everything. It’s about honoring the courage, the pain, and the resilience that live on in every military family, every veteran, and every community shaped by service.

I remember my own darkest season—seventeen, homeless, lost after my father died. I thought strength meant going it alone. But it was the kindness of strangers, the solidarity of the community, that helped me rise from the ashes. Today, I see that same spirit in every Gold Star family, every veteran rebuilding life after service, every person who chooses connection over isolation. This post is for you.

We live in a culture that celebrates “toughness”—the lone wolf, the silent sufferer, the soldier who never breaks. But real resilience isn’t about never falling. It’s about getting back up, again and again, together.

Our military teaches us the Tiger’s discipline: structure, courage, and clarity in the face of chaos. But it’s the Phoenix—the capacity to heal, surrender, and transform—that carries families and communities through the aftermath of loss and the long road of recovery.

Memorial Day is not just a day of mourning; it’s a day for honoring the invisible wounds, the quiet acts of courage, and the power of connection that helps us all rise.

Transformation Through the Four Human Domains

Body:
Service leaves marks—seen and unseen. The physical toll of deployment, training, and combat is real. For some, it’s a scar or a limp; for others, it’s fatigue or chronic pain. Healing starts with honoring those wounds, not hiding them. Movement, rest, and care aren’t luxuries—they’re acts of survival and remembrance.

Mind:
The mental battles don’t end when the uniform comes off. Anxiety, grief, and memories linger. But there’s strength in seeking clarity, in telling the truth about what hurts, and in reaching out for help. The Tiger’s mind is focused, but the Phoenix’s mind is willing to be changed by what it’s survived.

Heart:
Connection is the heartbeat of resilience. Military families know this better than most—the bond between those who serve, the love that holds them together across distance and danger, the grief that’s shared when someone doesn’t come home. We keep their spirit alive with vulnerability, support, and honest remembrance.

Spirit:
Service is an act of meaning. Every name we honor today stood for something greater than themselves. The spirit of the Phoenix is alive in every veteran who finds hope after loss, in every family that turns grief into legacy, in every community that refuses to forget.

The Five Pillars in Action (Memorial Day Edition)

Purpose:
Honor the fallen by living with intention. Let their sacrifice call you to gratitude and service in your own life.

Planning:
Create rituals of remembrance—visit a memorial, attend a ceremony, or share a story. Plan time to connect with those who serve or have served.

Practice:
Reach out to a veteran or military family. Offer a word of thanks, a listening ear, or a helping hand. Small acts of connection matter.

Perseverance:
Healing and remembrance are ongoing journeys. For families and veterans, the hardest days often come after the parades end. Keep showing up, even when it’s uncomfortable.

Providence:
Trust that every act of remembrance, every moment of connection, is a seed for future hope. Meaning unfolds in the stories we share and the bridges we build.

Real-World

Like the Tiger, our military stands strong, vigilant, disciplined, and courageous. But like the Phoenix, families and communities rise from loss, forging new life from ashes. The legacy of service is not just the battles fought, but the bonds formed and the hope rekindled, year after year.

Action Step / Challenge

This Memorial Day, honor the spirit of connection:

  • Reach out to a veteran or military family. Listen to their stories.
  • Participate in a moment of silence, lay a flower, or write a note of gratitude.
  • Donate to an organization that supports veterans or Gold Star families.
  • Share a memory or a lesson you’ve learned from someone who served.
  • Remembrance is a living practice. Let’s carry it forward, together.

Caution: The Trap of Silence

Don’t mistake silence for peace. The bravest thing you can do is to remember out loud—to hold space for grief, to ask for help, to offer support. Not every comeback is a healing story. Sometimes the wounds are still raw. Be gentle with yourself, and with those who carry invisible scars.

Journal Prompts / Self-Reflection

  • Who in your life has shown Tiger-like courage or Phoenix-like resilience?
  • What does Memorial Day mean to you personally?
  • How can you support those who serve or have served, not just today, but all year?
  • Where can you open your heart to a deeper connection and remembrance?
  • What story of service or sacrifice do you want to carry forward?

Rise

This Memorial Day, let’s honor the legacy of our military not just with words, but with action—by building bridges, tending to wounds, and rising together.
Let the Tiger’s strength and the Phoenix’s hope guide us as we remember, connect, and heal.

We just launched our Tiger Resilience Kids book series! 📚🧡

Our first two storybooks — Theo and the Courageous Climb and Phoebe and the Sky of Second Chances — are gentle, magical adventures that teach emotional resilience, confidence, and how to keep going when life gets tough.

These stories are built on the same Five Pillars and Four Domains that guide our adult programs — simplified for young hearts and minds. They’re full of color, character, and meaning.

✨ Right now, we are inviting a small group of parents, educators, and early supporters to join our ARC Launch Team (Advance Review Copy). You’ll get early access to the books and bonus activities — all I ask in return is your honest feedback and a review if the stories resonate.
