Why Change Feels Hard (And How to Make It Work for You)
Apr 17, 2025A popular statistic in psychology circles claims that 70% of all change initiatives fail. Whether in business, personal life, or even small daily habits, we tend to struggle when life asks us to do something different.
But here’s the truth nobody talks about — it’s not because we’re lazy, weak, or doomed to stay stuck.
Change feels hard because change is hard.
I remember sitting in my car one night years ago, hands gripping the steering wheel tighter than necessary, staring blankly at a gas station parking lot. Everything in my life had just changed — job gone, relationship over, living situation in chaos. And while I kept telling myself, “This is your chance to rebuild,” every part of me wanted to slam the door on that idea and sprint backwards into something familiar.
Sound familiar?
Maybe for you, it wasn’t a job loss. Perhaps it was a health scare. A breakup. Moving to a new city. Or maybe you just woke up one day realizing the way you’ve been living no longer fits the person you’re becoming.
This is your guide to understanding why that tension occurs when change knocks on your door — and, more importantly, how to turn that resistance into your next breakthrough.
The Psychology of Resistance
At its core, resistance to change isn’t a flaw — it’s a feature of being human.
Our brains are hardwired to prioritize predictability over possibility. This survival instinct is rooted in ancient times when unfamiliar situations often meant danger. Change forces us to step into uncertainty, and discomfort, fear, and the looming sense of losing control come with that.
But the kicker?
Change itself isn’t what triggers the most stress. It’s the perceived loss of control over that change.
This brings us to one of resilience's most powerful psychological frameworks: your Locus of Control.
Internal vs External Locus of Control
→ Internal Locus of Control: You believe your choices shape your life more than your circumstances.
→ External Locus of Control: You believe outside forces (luck, other people, environment) dictate your outcomes.
Neither is inherently good or bad — but people with a stronger internal locus tend to feel more resilient during change because they focus on what they can control instead of what they can’t.
Actionable Tip: Locus of Control Self-Check
→ Grab a notebook.
→ Write down a recent challenge or change in your life.
→ Then ask:
“In this situation, what was within my control — and what wasn’t?”
Get brutally honest. You might be surprised how often we give away our power without realizing it.
Reclaiming Your Power Through Purpose
This is where the first two pillars of Tiger Resilience step in: Purpose and Perseverance.
Without purpose, change feels random, like life is happening to you instead of for you. But with purpose, change becomes directional. It becomes meaningful.
I’ve lived this.
Years ago, after being homeless at 17, after losing my dad, after feeling like life kept handing me loss after loss — I didn’t magically develop resilience. I clawed for it, one decision at a time.
What saved me wasn’t motivation. It wasn’t luck.
It was purpose.
I decided my life story wasn’t going to end where it started. I decided I would build something different — not just for myself, but one day for others who felt lost like I did.
That decision didn’t erase pain. It gave pain a place to go.
And that’s the secret: Purpose turns pain into power.
Actionable Tip: Align With Your Purpose This Week
→ Write down one goal — big or small — that reflects the person you want to become.
→ Now, ask:
“What is one small action I can take this week to move toward that goal?”
Maybe it’s sending an email. Signing up for that class. Or simply admitting out loud: “I’m ready for something better.”
Movement creates momentum. Even tiny steps matter.
Building Resilience in the Face of Change
This is where Practice and Providence come alive.
Resilience isn’t built in the big dramatic moments of change. It’s built in the daily practices that strengthen our capacity to hold discomfort without running from it.
If you want to get better at navigating change, you have to train for it — just like any muscle.
What Builds Resilience?
- Mindfulness practices that bring you back to the present.
- Physical movement that grounds you in your body.
- Relationships that remind you you’re not alone.
- A spiritual or reflective practice that helps you see meaning beyond the moment.
It’s not about never feeling fear or discomfort. It’s about increasing your tolerance for those feelings without letting them dictate your actions.
Actionable Tip: A Grounding Practice for Change
Here’s one I’ve used with clients and in my own life — especially when everything feels like it’s spinning.
Box Breathing (Simple & Powerful)
- Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds.
- Hold for 4 seconds.
- Exhale slowly for 4 seconds.
- Hold for 4 seconds.
- Repeat for 4 rounds.
It’s amazing what happens when you bring your nervous system back online before making your next move.
Or try this:
→ Gratitude Grounding: Name 3 things right now that you’re grateful for despite the change you’re navigating.
This simple shift changes your mental posture from fear-based to resource-based.
In Sum: Call to Action and Reflection
Change isn’t your enemy.
It’s the doorway to your next evolution.
It asks hard questions. It stretches your capacity. It challenges your habits, beliefs, and comfort zones.
But on the other side of that discomfort? There’s growth waiting for you.
There’s freedom.
There’s power.
There’s a version of you that’s more grounded, more resilient, and more alive than ever.
Reflective Question for You:
What’s one change you’ve resisted — or are resisting — that might actually lead to something better?
Write it down. Sit with it. Today may be the day you stop running from it and start walking toward it.
Change is coming either way.
Will you fight it?
Or will you rise through it?
Final Words
Change will always feel hard. But hard isn’t bad — it’s just unfamiliar.
When you build Purpose, lean into Practice, embody Perseverance, embrace Planning, and trust Providence — you stop fearing change.
You start shaping it.
